You have been in therapy and nothing seems to be changing. You are shifting your thought patterns and beliefs, but your emotions still seem to be uncontrollable.
You have done a lot of self-work by journaling, reading, and trying to understand things intellectually. You have tried to get as much information as you can about mental health and how you can get more control of your mental well-being, but you seem to be stuck in the same relational patterns and experiencing the same emotional reactions.
It’s like when you keep weeding your mental garden, but the weeds keep sprouting up because you haven’t pulled them out from their roots.
Maybe you have tried different therapists who use different modalities to get support. Maybe you have many different insights in therapy, but those have not translated into changing your behavior or shifted your relationships to be healthier.
It may seem like there is no light at the end of the tunnel, that you will be stuck in this place forever and you never be able to get control of your emotions. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel!
Despite feeling stuck, there are ways to get control of your emotions, create changes in your life, and create healthier relationships with the support of a therapist who knows how to bring your whole self into the therapy room to create shifts at multiple levels; a therapists that integrates your body, mind, and spirit.
You are not alone in feeling stuck in therapy when you are only focusing on your thoughts and beliefs, because that type of therapy misses where most of our emotions live-- in our body!
We are multi-faceted beings that are more than our mind. Our mental health is not limited to what we think. We cannot impact our mental health with our mind alone, because our minds are deeply connected to our bodies and spirits.
The medical model of mental health likes to separate us into parts, but those parts are interconnected. Therapy that integrates mind, body, and spirit allows us to work at multiple levels to support you as a whole system and not just as a floating mind full of thoughts.
Somatic and mindfulness-based therapy integrates our body’s responses, sensations, and experiences in conjunction with the thoughts and beliefs that we hold in our mind.
Somatic therapy and mindfulness tune our awareness to what is happening in our bodies and provide tools to manage our emotions to be able to better understand and regulate our emotions. We use knowledge about our nervous system, how emotions show up in our body, and practice tuning into what is happening in our body. I combine body-based and narrative methods of therapy to create a process that integrates mind, body, and spirit to step into your best self to create the life you want to live.
Once you have built body-awareness, learned tools to manage your emotions from the body up, and examined how your thoughts and beliefs are connected with the experiences in your body, you will gain deeper wisdom in how to shift your life from the root of the issues.
If you are ready to bring your full self to therapy and be able to get control of your sensitivity, I am here to support you on your holistic therapy journey.
It can be hard to reach out for support and it is the first step in building the life you want.
I look forward to connecting with you and helping you to reconnect to your full self.
